  1. I think Holden could benefit from the talking cure, because talking can get a lot off your mind. If you talk you can get great advice to help a problem and after talking you feel less stressful. Holden is stressed and he acts violent from being stressed. If Holden doesn’t speak and he keeps holding in his problem, then he will act worse and feel more stressed leading to depression. Holden is going through a lot of problems not even involving his brother Allie’s death, but how he was put in a mental institution, and many other problems, but he keeps holding his problems in which leads him to act like a wreck. I think holding could benefit from the talking cure.

Holden could benefit from the talking cure because he might want to change his feelings for his terrible past. Talking can help nearly any problem especially the ones Holden is going through. I think Holden would act like a different person after letting out all his problems. He might remember the problems but if he gets good advice I think he could get through his problems easier. The talking cure could most likely help Holden.

    1. I agree with this; that Holden could benefit from the talking cure. Often times, holding in your problems and letting them "simmer" lead to depression as stated. This in turn, I assume would affect his mental status.

    2. I agree that the 'talking cure'' strategy would definitely benefit Holden he will finally have the chance to let go of all his suffering pains. Also he would become a better and stable person and not go down the road into depression or anything worse than his current mental status.

    3. I agree that maybe if Holden does the talking cure, it may change all his feelings and that can possibly change his behaviors.

  2. Holden Caulfield could benefit from the talking cure and become less depressed and caught up in his brother's death. Holden is stuck in a mental institution because he has been greatly effected by the loss of his brother, Allie. The loss of a loved one effects many people, but Holden was effected much more than any other person. One thing that may help Holden overcome this issue, is the talking cure.

The talking cure is said to help people resolve their problems by discussing them. Talking to someone else about internal issues can relieve stress and pain caused by these issues. Sigmund Freud once said that if emotion is held in, it will build up, and eventually be released all at once. Holden can benefit from this because talking about his brother's death may relieve his pain that he his holding inside.

    1. I agree with the fact that you said that he was institutionalized due to his brothers fact. Also I really enjoyed how you used Sigmund Freud's quote because that specific quote really pertains to the story and it explains Holden very well. I agree that by using the "Talking Cure" he might relieve the pain caused by his brother's death.

    2. I completely agree with what you said about him talking about his brother's death would relieve his pain. Talking about your problems can make all the difference and lead to a solution. Henry ford once wrote; "Most people spend more time and energy going around problems than in trying to solve them." I believe this is exactly what Holden is doing and may be a contributing factor to his mental status.

    3. I definitely agree with you, especially about the fact that losing his brother has affected his life. He should use the ''talking cure'' to just let out all burdens he's been carrying within himself. The hurts he carries inside is what's putting him in his mental state, and he needs to let the pains go by talking to someone.

  3. I believe Holden will benefit from the "Talking Cure" simply for the fact that he harbors deep feelings of depression inside coming from the circumstance he as experienced in his lifetime. For example, he was kicked out of Pencey, it shows that this was not the first school he was kicked out of, this causes him to develop a depressing mentality. Holden I believe has still not come to terms with the death of his kid brother Allie's death and by not coming to terms with Allie's death he allows himself to shield his emotions and attain a caged in mentality.

Holden could benefit from the "Talking Cure" because by talking about his problems it can help get out of the depressed mindset and eventually lead him into a more accepting and calm ideal. The cure can also allow him away to truly express himself and let out his emotions because by holding them in he is only hurting himself in the process of coveting all the pain he has held in.After the "Talking Cure", I know that Holden would easily become a better person and lead a very promising path in life.

    1. I also believe that Holden could benefit from the talking cure. I agree with you that he is choosing to hide his emotions by not accepting his brother's death. I also agree that getting kicked out of multiple schools only adds to his depressing mental state.

  4. I believe Holden could benefit from the talking cure. It’s obvious that Holden is not in a very good mental state because of what happened to his brother. I feel that venting out his problems will help his mental state out a lot and he’d be more normal. And maybe he’d be able to get his life back together.

Holden has been kicked out of many schools and it doesn’t really seem to bother him at all. He doesn’t really apply himself and seems like he’s not going to get anywhere in life. If he will get all of the bad feelings off his mind than maybe he’ll start applying himself and caring more about what he’ll do with his life.

    1. I agree completely with your reasoning because you are right about the fact that Holden is suffering a bad mental state due to the death of his brother. Also I agree that by venting to someone he can eventually become normal and get his life together.

    2. I agree with the fact that you said he will not get on with his life if he continues to have this mentality. I also believe that he will move on and start caring more about his life if he uses the talking cure.

    3. I agree with you when you said if he don't talk to someone then he will never get on with his life. I think Holden could get out of the depression mode if he talks

  5. I believe that Holden would greatly benefit from the talking cure. Firstly, we already know that Holden finds relief in telling his story because that's exactly what Catcher in the Rye is--him telling his story. Holden suffered a tragedy of losing his brother when he was younger. This affected Holden's mental health. After he learned of his brother's death, he punched out windows in his garage. He was forced to spend weeks in the hospital to be evaluated.

On the other hand, Holden is unreliable and untrustworthy. Therefore, if he was to talk about his problems, we can't be sure how much of it is the truth. We are made aware of this when Holden mentions that he is a great liar, hinting that we don't know how much of the story is true.

    1. Holden does like to talk about himself in this book. The death to Holden's brother was a tough and difficult time on Holden. The mental institution really got to me because that means Holden really has something wrong with him. You cant really trust him cause he is known to not follow directions. I cant even trust this book because Holden is an unreliable author.

  6. The “talking cure” method would definitely benefit Holden because I feel that if he spoke to someone about what he is dealing with, he will soon feel better. For example, Holden has troubles in school where he is failing 4 out of 5 of his classes. He might not be as focused on his work as he should be. His mind just drifts off into thoughts that probably have to do with problems he might be going through. Also Mr. Spencer tries to convince Holden to having a good future with working harder, but Holden just left. With the “talking cure’’ method, Holden will be able to express the issues he feels, and just clear his head of all troubles or hopefully start caring about who he actually is.
Also another example of signs that relate to Holden’s rage of issues is how angry he becomes after losing his brother Allie. Allie was very important to Holden, and after he died, Holden just wasn't himself. He has currently went into a mental state, placing him in a psychiatric hospital. Holden has all of these burdens held within himself that is badly affecting him inside and out. So using the “talking cure’’ method would greatly affect Holden and possibly empty all heavy pains he has been carrying.

  7. I believe the "talking cure" method is effective because because it is a form of stress release to let feeling away from your thoughts. Holding in pain and thoughts can cause more stress to a person. Stress affects s many people in today's society and maybe the talking cure can help cure this if you speak of the stress building up to the right person. A good example of a person to talk to is a parent, long time friend, family member, or a teacher that you are comfortable with.

Holden should take advantage of the talking cure method because of all the hardships that are happening in his life right now. With the loss of his brother and failing of his grades, Holden is having great depression and the talking cure may be one of the only things that may help relieve this problem. Being put into a mental hospital would also affect the mental stability of Holden, thinking he is not fit enough to be in this world. This is why I believe Holden should do the talking cure.

    1. I think your right by saying it effects people in a good way by relieving stress. I think your also right when you said you can talk to a parent, friend, family member, or a teacher that you know and trust.

    2. I agree with what you're saying. The talking cure is a great way to relieve stress. I personally use the talking cure when i am upset or mad about something. Holden could really benefit from this so i agree with you on that too.

  8. I definitely think holden could benefit from this talking cure. He always seems like someone who holds in his emotions and he needs to let them out. Holden is so over stressed and needs to relieve some of it by the talking cure. I personally know this from experience i would always hold in my emotions and i felt better after talking to someone about them. He let his anger get the best of him when he tried to hurt Stradlater and he ended up hurt in the end. If he just talked to someone i guarantee he would not be this angry.

Also if he spent a lot more time with friends he would relieve so much stress. He would always have a way to relieve anger. I know i always vent to my friends because they always listen to me and are always listening. At least i think they are. But yes i personally think Holden could definitely benefit from the talking cure.

    1. I agree with holding your emotions isn't good for you and thats why people get depressed and are in pain because they don't just let it all out.

    2. I agree with the fact that he is holding all his emotions in and needs to get all his feelings out because it isn't healthy, if not using the talking method then in some other way.

  10. I think the “talking cure” can help someone drastically, even save their lives because its good to just tell someone what’s on your mind so you're not the only one carrying the burden. Also more people should at least try the method and it may just reduce crime, suicide and social problems. The “talking cure” could help kids and even adults with bullying or making friends because they wouldn’t take their anger out on other people and make them feel bad about themselves.

Holden could really use this especially with his mental and social problem. The method could help him get a little better mental wise by talking about what he thinks about and getting advice on how to deal with it. Now, when it comes to social he doesn’t really know how to make friends so once he sees that talking to someone is easy from using the “talking cure” he could have a lot more friends. This is what I think the “talking cure” can do and how it can help Holden and people in general.

    1. I agree with you. I like the fact that you brought in the effects of some outcomes of not doing the talking cure. Suicide is a huge problem in our society today and should seriously be looked upon. Everybody should have someone that they can talk to about some issues they can be facing in life.

  11. I believe that the talking cure would benefit Holden. This would benefit Holden emotionally after all he has dealt with in his past including failing classes, the loss of his brother, and being put into a mental institute. The affect of being put into a mental hospital could have affected Holden even more by thinking he may not be good enough to be in the position hes in and that he will never fit into the real world.

By using the talking cure, Holden can mention all his problems to all the people that he trusts. It may be hard for Holden to communicate with anybody he fully trusts since he is in a mental hospital, but if he has the chance to, he should imply this and let go of all the stress and pressure he has built. Since Holden is an excellent liar, what we know of the story and what is the actual truth could be different. This is why I believe that the talking cure is effective and should be implemented by Holden

    1. I agree with the fact that his is in the mindset that he may not be good enough to fit in the real world, he needs to change that so that he can be happier, more involved, and less lonely.

    2. I also agree that the talking cure would benefit Holden and I like your thinking of how you think that him being in a mental hospital would make him even less sane.

  12. It’s possible that Holden could benefit from the talking cure but very unlikely. It’s unlikely because Holden is the type of person to lie, and fake his way through any situation he doesn’t want to deal with or is uncomfortable in. Holden doesn’t take most of the things in his life seriously. So it is hard to believe that he would be truthful with using the talking cure method. Only a couple chapters in the book and you can see that Holden tries to hide his feelings or push them aside. One example is when Jane is downstairs and he wouldn’t go down and talk to her because he was to nervous, so instead he kept asking questions trying to act like he didn’t care that much. Another is when Holden started throwing punches at Stradlater because he wouldn’t tell Holden exactly what he and Jane did in the car.

Holden seems to be in the depression stage out of the five stages of grief. He doesn’t care about anything, he was very sensitive about the composition about Allie, he isolates himself from everyone else, he believes everyone that is grown up is a phony, he doesn’t want to grow up. He hasn’t accepted Allie being gone, and his reality. I think the only way to help him is have someone close to him, someone or people who Holden trusts that can explain to him what he life could be if he continues his ways. Mr. Spence attempted that but Holden basically zoned out because he has no respect for him. Possible his little sister, Phoebe could help him because she is the only one who understands him apparently. Holden needs to go through the “reorganization wave”.

    1. I agree but then disagree. Holden does tend to lie, but sometimes he does actually tell the truth. I do think in the book so far that Holden is in fact depressed. He doesn't seem happy at all. Holden does in fact not take things seriously and tend to do one thing when someone says another.

  13. Yes, I do think that Holden could benefit from the talking cure discussed in last night’s homework. To be honest it seems like Holden has a lot of problems going on with him right now. For instance his brother Allie died of leukemia and he took out his anger by punching windows. Not only was this the wrong way to take out your frustration, but he has injuries because of it. The injuries he sustained from punching the windows are that he can’t properly make a fist anymore. In my mind I believe Holden has something to clear off his chest. He’s a complicated teen with complicated situations.

Another thing is that I think that the reason he’s slacking in school is because he’s frustrated. With the talking cure he could discuss his feelings toward school such as things like his roommate. Talking to someone will clear his mind of whatever he’s thinking and provide him with the comfort of being able to open to someone verbally. Another thing is Holden doesn’t really like Stradlater and Ackley. Maybe he might want to talk about why he doesn’t like them. For example Holden talks about his brother selling out to Hollywood and he might have a few things to say about that.
